Sunday was the “Xpresso to go” World Premier at Bietigheim-Bissingen, about three years since I last went touring in Canada with YWAM, and almost exactly year since Xpresso started to make presentations in the "New" service as the "Kemnat Lutheran church storytelling team". By happy coincidence it was also the same piece as we used 364 days earlier: "Golf and the Prophet Jeremiah".
After a pleasant if inadvertent tour of the town and several attractive churches we found the one we were hunting for just as the host pastor arrived. The church we were visiting was a Lutheran church, and in common with most Lutheran churches the acoustics were terrible. The team did their best but the congregation were mostly old, and as is often the case, had a preference for the rearmost pews. In traditional churches people often don’t know how to respond to theatre or storytelling so it’s hard to get any feedback while onstage, but the team dealt with both problems pretty well: they just got on with the job and presented the piece. How we deal with this in future is an interesting question: buying and carrying sound equipment will be prohibitive and will limit our possible venues.
Next week we keep going, with a trip out to a vineyard church. This carries a whole new set of staging problems: The church building is more shallow and there is some sound equipment, but there is no raised area and the ceiling is low, really low: we may have to invent a whole new drive swing.
