We went and voted yesterday.
taken very seriously, but then, there’s money in it.
We were checked and double-checked and eventually plonked our envelope (Hopefully holding the right pieces of blue and pink paper) into the box, and then we went next door where some of our young people had set up a small café for people voting.
And there were a lot of people voting, most of whom I’d never set eyes on before, certainly in a church service, which is just one of the surreal things about the Lutheran church in Germany. It could be ultimate in ‘seeker driven church’: lots of people who never come have a say in what we can do.
At the door was a large display of the old church building, demolished in 1961. I have no idea why someone thought this was important. Maybe they wanted to make a point. The only point it made for me was that for all its faults our 45 year old building isn’t that bad. I wanted to put a sign on the bottom saying, “See, it could be worse” but for some reason no one would let me.
The vote finished much as expected. Some of the people we voted for didn’t get in and some we didn’t vote for did get in. It was the same at a regional level, and the balance is about the same before. At least now it’s over we can get on with the day-to-day business of being church.
