'The Cheapest Show on Earth' came and went on Sunday, with a bang, a crash and a lot of flying diabolos. our first largely team-built and non-scripted show went pretty well: there were no awkward silences, and people seemed to be fairly relaxed about us suddenly turning the service into something of a circus for five minutes, and one of the team seems to be very keen on further circus arts, so I doubt this will be the last time we see this style.
The theme of the service was 'trust' so we gradually built up the level of tension, starting with a trust exercise where someone fell backwards to be caught by some volunteers, and moving on to more unusual material before a finale throwing diabolos over a line of water balloons and buckets suspended above the congregation, up into the balcony, back down into the church and to the front again.
Remarkably we managed this without hitting the rope or dropping the diabolos at all. It is no exaggeration to say this is a miracle: I was expecting that we'd drop it at least once.
In the afternoon we celebrated the lack of soaked or concussed church members with a large barbecue, which was partly a farewell to one of the Xpresso team who is off to work for Youth With A Mission in Hamburg for a couple of years.
Our next 'Morgenbrot' piece is in about five weeks, but we've been asked to work with the current 'Konfirmanden' (14 year olds taking confirmation classes, most of whom have no church background) on Saturday. This is a really great opportunity to reach the group with somthing new. I'll let you know what happens as the project unfolds.
