A while ago I posted about our experiment planting tomatoes and cucumbers. These have grown happily while we were in the UK and we are now watering them and beginning to harvest fresh cucumbers and tomatoes now and again. Better still we have been loaned a section of garden to do some further planting in. There are only a few vegetables that will grow now, so we're trying to get the plot as ready as we can, to take advantage of the remaining growing season and prepare for next year.
Some determined cutting of a large bush has revealed a tub that can give us a water supply, so we will clean this up and fit a tap as soon as possible, and get a couple of watering cans. We've been allowed to use the tools in the garden as well, so we can save some money for this in the short term, but we are short of materials to make raised beds. This isn't a high-tech enterprise, we're looking for things like old bits of wood, roofing tiles or bricks, even paving slabs, essentially stuff that would otherwise lurk in a cellar forever or be thrown away. If anyone locally has something like this or knows where we could go to get them (would people let us hunt in their skips?), please let us know.
